Tituba(Parris's African American slave):
What does Tituba have to hide? What is she afraid of?
Tituba is trying to preserve her African culture by dancing and palm reading. She has to hide these characteristics about herself because then she would be accused of being a witch and hanged. She is afraid of losing her job and being persecuted by the overly religious court.
Speech: "No no sir, I don't trunk with no devil" (Miller 41)
Thoughts: She is afraid to defy her master's (Parris) word and denies her connection with witchcraft.
Effects on others: She teaches Abigail, Betty, Ruth, and Mary to conjure the dead by dancing and drinking blood.
Actions: She obediently listens to Parris which shows her fear.
She speaks in the Barbados language and performs spells which reveals her witchlike characteristics.
Looks: She is African American therefore she is a slave.
